CYBER ESSENTIALS
How Cyber Essentials Certification Works

Cyber Essentials certification doesn't have to be complicated. Here's how to get started.
By now you have hopefully worked out that Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed cybersecurity certification scheme designed to help organisations protect themselves against common cyber threats. We talk about it *A LOT* on this website, because we have tons of experience that we want to share with everyone, and we believe Cyber Essentials compliance is really important for keeping confidential data and IT systems safe.
The certification process evaluates how effectively your organisation implements five fundamental security controls: firewalls, secure configuration, security update management, user access control and malware protection.
For many organisations, the biggest challenge isn't understanding these requirements. It's knowing whether their existing systems meet them, identifying what needs fixing and gathering the information required for assessment.
SecureX7 helps take the uncertainty out of certification preparation. By automatically discovering assets, assessing security configurations, identifying vulnerabilities and generating actionable remediation workplans, SecureX7 helps organisations understand their readiness before submitting an assessment.
Know where you stand. Fix what matters. Approach certification with confidence.
The Certification Process
Five steps to achieving Cyber Essentials certification
Cyber Essentials certification follows a structured assessment process. Understanding each stage helps you prepare effectively and avoid unnecessary delays.
1. Define Your Assessment Scope
Identify the devices, systems, users and services included in your assessment.
This typically involves reviewing laptops, desktops, servers, cloud services, network equipment and other relevant systems.
Your scope must accurately reflect the environment being assessed and comply with the scheme's scoping rules.
How SecureX7 helps: Automatically discover supported assets and installed software, giving you greater visibility of the environment before defining your assessment scope.
2. Review Your Security Controls
Assess your environment against the five Cyber Essentials technical controls.
Check that firewalls are correctly configured, devices are securely configured, software is supported and updated, access privileges are appropriate and malware protection is effective.
How SecureX7 helps: Identify supported configuration weaknesses, vulnerabilities and security gaps, with clear guidance on the corrective actions required.
3. Remediate Identified Weaknesses
Address security issues before completing your certification assessment.
This might involve applying software updates, disabling unnecessary services, removing excessive administrator privileges or correcting insecure firewall settings.
How SecureX7 helps: Use AI-assisted remediation workplans to prioritise weaknesses and guide administrators through the changes required.
4. Complete the Cyber Essentials Assessment
Purchase certification through an authorised Cyber Essentials Certification Body.
For standard Cyber Essentials certification, your organisation completes a verified self-assessment questionnaire covering the five technical controls.
An assessor reviews the submitted answers and may request clarification or additional information.
For Cyber Essentials Plus, an independent technical assessment is also required.
How SecureX7 helps: Provide technical assessment findings and supporting information to help your organisation prepare accurate responses. The formal questionnaire and certification decision remain with the authorised Certification Body.
5. Achieve Certification and Maintain Your Security
Once your assessment has been successfully completed, your organisation receives Cyber Essentials certification.
Certification is valid for twelve months, after which reassessment is required to maintain certification.
However, your security environment continues to change throughout that period.
How SecureX7 helps: Regularly reassess supported devices, identify emerging vulnerabilities and configuration weaknesses, and maintain a clearer understanding of your security posture between annual assessments.
Certification is an important milestone. Maintaining effective security is an ongoing responsibility.
What You Need Before You Start
Get the fundamentals right before submitting your assessment.
Preparing for Cyber Essentials is easier when you understand your environment and have addressed common technical weaknesses.
Focus on the following areas:
Understand your IT environment
Maintain an accurate inventory of devices, operating systems, applications and cloud services within your proposed assessment scope.
Check your firewall protection
Ensure appropriate boundary and host-based firewalls are enabled and correctly configured. Review unnecessary inbound access and firewall exceptions.
Establish secure configurations
Remove unnecessary software and services, change insecure default settings and ensure devices follow appropriate security baselines.
Keep software supported and updated
Identify unsupported operating systems and applications. Apply qualifying high-risk and critical security updates within the required 14-day period.
Review user accounts and privileges
Ensure users have appropriate permissions, administrator access is restricted and multi-factor authentication is implemented where required.
Verify malware protection
Confirm that suitable malware protection measures are active, appropriately configured and maintained.
Prepare accurate assessment information
Understand who manages your systems, how security controls are implemented and which devices and services are included in your assessment.
SecureX7 can help automate much of the technical discovery and assessment work, reducing the time administrators spend manually reviewing individual devices.
