CYBER ESSENTIALS
Cyber Essentials versus Cyber Essentials Plus

Two levels of certification. The same five controls. Different levels of assurance.
Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus are UK government-backed cybersecurity certifications designed to protect organisations against common cyber attacks.
Both assess the same five fundamental security controls: firewalls, secure configuration, security update management, user access control and malware protection.
The difference lies in how compliance is demonstrated.
Cyber Essentials is an independently verified self-assessment. Your organisation answers questions about its security arrangements, which are reviewed by an authorised Certification Body.
Cyber Essentials Plus goes further, adding independent technical testing to verify that the required controls have been implemented effectively.
For smaller organisations, Cyber Essentials provides an accessible starting point. For organisations handling sensitive information, working with demanding customers or seeking greater assurance, Cyber Essentials Plus may be more appropriate.
Whichever route you choose, the challenge is understanding your current security posture and addressing weaknesses before assessment.
SecureX7 helps automate asset discovery, vulnerability identification and security configuration assessment, providing AI-powered actionable guidance to help organisations prepare for either certification.
Same security requirements. Different assessment methods. One objective: better cybersecurity.
Side-by-Side Comparison
Understand what changes — and what stays the same
Both certifications follow the same technical requirements, but Cyber Essentials Plus provides a higher level of independent verification.
| Requirement | Cyber Essentials | Cyber Essentials Plus |
| Five technical security controls | Yes | Yes |
| Assessment method | Verified self-assessment | Self-assessment plus technical audit |
| Independent Certification Body | Yes | Yes |
| Vulnerability scanning as part of assessment | No | Yes |
| Technical testing of devices | No | Yes |
| Level of assurance | Baseline | Enhanced |
| Typical preparation | Review controls and complete questionnaire | Prepare systems, complete questionnaire and undergo testing |
| Certification validity | 12 months | 12 months |
| Cost | Fixed fee based on organisation size | Individually quoted |
| Best suited to | Organisations establishing or demonstrating baseline security | Organisations requiring independently tested assurance |
Cyber Essentials Plus testing includes external and internal vulnerability assessment and checks on a representative selection of in-scope devices.
The Plus assessment must be completed within three months of achieving the prerequisite Cyber Essentials certification.
Importantly, Cyber Essentials Plus does not introduce five new security controls. It provides stronger evidence that the existing controls have been implemented correctly.
This distinction makes technical readiness especially important. A configuration that appears compliant in a questionnaire may fail when independently examined.
Which Certification Do You Need?
Choose the level of assurance your organisation requires
The appropriate certification depends on your contractual obligations, customer expectations, security risks and the level of independent assurance you want to demonstrate.
Choose Cyber Essentials when:
- You want to establish a recognised baseline of cybersecurity.
- Customers or contracts require standard Cyber Essentials certification.
- You are a smaller organisation seeking an accessible certification process.
- You want to demonstrate that fundamental security controls are in place.
Consider Cyber Essentials Plus when:
- A customer, procurement process or contract specifically requires it.
- You handle sensitive information or provide services where independent assurance is particularly valuable.
- You want technical verification rather than relying solely on a self-assessment.
- You need stronger evidence of security control effectiveness for customers or stakeholders.
Cyber Essentials Plus involves additional cost and preparation, but it can provide greater confidence that security controls operate as intended.
For organisations planning to achieve Plus, it makes sense to prepare for the technical assessment from the outset rather than treating it as a separate project after completing Cyber Essentials.
The best choice isn't necessarily the highest certification. It's the certification that meets your obligations and provides the assurance your organisation needs.
Prepare for Either Route
Find and fix security weaknesses before your assessment
Successful Cyber Essentials preparation starts with understanding the devices, software and security configurations within your assessment scope.
Whether completing the verified self-assessment or preparing for independent technical testing, the underlying work is largely the same.
1. Discover your assets
Identify in-scope computers, servers, software and relevant infrastructure. Unknown or unmanaged devices can create gaps in your assessment.
2. Assess the five controls
Review firewall configurations, secure settings, security updates, user privileges and malware protection against the Cyber Essentials requirements.
3. Identify vulnerabilities
Check for unsupported software, missing security fixes and known vulnerabilities that could affect certification.
4. Prioritise remediation
Separate urgent security weaknesses from less significant findings, focusing on issues that could cause assessment failure or create unnecessary exposure.
5. Verify corrective actions
Confirm that updates have installed successfully, configurations have changed as intended and identified weaknesses have been resolved.
SecureX7 helps automate these technical assessment activities and provides AI-powered guidance explaining what needs attention and how to address it.
For Cyber Essentials Plus, this preparation is especially valuable because an independent assessor will test whether controls are actually implemented.
Don't wait for an assessor to discover weaknesses you could have identified yourself.
The SecureX7 Difference
From assessment preparation to continuous cybersecurity assurance
Traditional Cyber Essentials preparation often involves manually reviewing devices, gathering information from different tools and rushing to resolve security problems before certification.
SecureX7 offers a more systematic approach.
Automated Asset Discovery
Establish visibility of devices and installed software across your environment, helping identify assets that require assessment.
Security Configuration Assessment
Evaluate supported technical settings against security requirements and identify configuration weaknesses that may undermine Cyber Essentials compliance.
Vulnerability Identification
Discover known vulnerabilities, outdated software and missing security fixes that require attention.
Risk-Based Prioritisation
Understand which findings matter most, helping teams focus remediation efforts on the issues presenting the greatest exposure.
AI-Powered Actionable Guidance
Ask practical questions such as “What could prevent us passing Cyber Essentials?” or “What should we fix first?” and receive guidance informed by available security assessment data.
Continuous Reassessment
Track changing configurations and newly identified weaknesses between annual certification assessments, rather than allowing security posture to deteriorate unnoticed.
SecureX7 does not replace an authorised Cyber Essentials Certification Body or award certification. It helps organisations prepare by identifying technical weaknesses, supporting remediation and providing visibility of their ongoing security posture.
Cyber Essentials tells you what controls you need. Cyber Essentials Plus tests whether they work. SecureX7 helps you establish and maintain the security posture needed for both.
